It’s not about you.

You maybe walking into this thinking about what an amazing impact you are going to make on the people there.  Maybe you are thinking about all the things you are going to teach the children.  Well, stop.  This trip isn’t about you.  It’s not even about the people there.  It’s about the amazing things that God is going to do while you are there.  If you let him he will show you how great and powerful he can be.  But you have to open yourself up to all he has to offer.

Feb 20th John 6:27 What is your food that parishes?  What do you feel is the food you need from God the father almighty?

You can do everything you need to survive but the way that you really live is through him.  We all need food, water, and shelter.  That’s what we need to survive.  What do we need to live?  What do you need to make your life one that is going to be more than what the world has planned for you?  What are you willing to do to let him work through you, and in you?

Feb. 21st Luke 9:23 “Then he said to them all: ‘If anyone would come after me, me must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

How are you denying yourself and taking up your cross daily? This is more than just saying that you want to follow him.  It’s asking yourself everyday what you can do better than the last day.

Feb. 22nd  Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

Are you willing to give up your plans and let God use you to fulfill his plan?  I love lists, I love plans,  I hate it when I cant cross things off my list.  However, I know that my list is nothing compared to the plan that God has to offer to us.

Feb. 23rd  John 5:30 “By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgement is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.”

God promises that you are made for a purpose.  But to get to your full potential you have to allow him to work through you as only he can.

Feb. 24th   Philippians 2:4  “Let each of you look not  only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

We are there to serve them and their needs.  Make sure that you are leaving them with something that will last for them and not only yourself.  How can you do this?

Feb. 25th   1 John 3:17  “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”

How are you going to let God’s love show through you?

Feb. 26th Acts 20:35  “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

We are going to be working hard.  We are going to be tired.  We are going to be drained.  But he also promises that we will be blessed as we bless others.

Answering God’s Call

God has call you to Mexico.  And you have answered.  We are called to spread the good news of God.  It can be scary and it can make you uneasy.  The following verses help us to know that we are doing the right thing.  Each day this week I want you to read through the verse and pray about the mission we are about to go on.  Pray for affirmation that you are on the right track.

Feb 27th Jeramiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, Before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

God knew you before you were even born.  He knew the plan that he was going to set before you.

Feb. 28th Mark 16:15 “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”

We are doing exactly as God has called us to do.  Some can think this is overwhelming but you have chosen to go and do as you are called.

March 1st 1 Corinthians 7:17 “Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him.  This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.”

We have been convicted to follow through with what we have been called.  How are you going to keep on the path that God has chosen for you?

Mar. 2nd Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

What we are asked to do is good and out of love.  How are you going to present God’s word with love?

Mar. 3rd 1 Peter 4:10 “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

Not only has he called you to this purpose he has also given you gift to carry it out.  What gifts do you have that can help you with this calling?

Mar. 4th Isaiah 6:8 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send?  And who will go for us?’  And I said, ‘Here am I.  Send me!”

Are you facing this call with a voice that says “Here I am”?   Are you going to walk into this with a willing heart?

A Long Hard Look

Mar. 5th Romans 11:29 “for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.”

What God has given you cannot be taken back.  His call for us is never going to change.  We may want it to.  It may be hard.  We may think that we have been given a gift that we can’t use, but God doesn’t make mistakes.  So look and see what he is calling you to do and what gifts he has given you to do them.

Mar. 6th Mark 6:52 “for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.”

If we don’t look at the thinks God has done for us it is hard to see what he has called us to do.  It is easy to overlook the things that He has done.  Even little things like provided food for us every day.  If we overlook the good that he has done, we may overlook the good he asks of us.

Mar. 7th Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”

Where are you getting your strength from?  Are you looking within or are you looking to him.  And how are you plaining and getting your strength from him?

Mar 8th 1 Peter 3:4 “Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”

God works within you.  In the quiet when you can be most intimate with him.  How often do you spend quiet, focused time just on him?

Mar. 9th Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires for your heart.”

Sometimes the things God calls us to do seem overwhelming.  But when we start to focus on him, really build a relationship with him it gives us a renewed spirit.  Think about it,  I hate cleaning my house.  It’s awful.  But if my friend asks me to come to their house to help them clean their room I don’t hesitate.  Or at least I know that it will be better because I know they will be there.  The same can be said when we do something when we do with God working through us.

Mar. 10th Job 9:4 “His wisdom is profound, his power is vast.  Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?”

How many times have we tried to ignore what God has asked of you because you don’t think that you are capable, you don’t think it’s the right time, you don’t know if it’s the right thing to do…..  You can always come up with reasons why your way is better than his.  However, you haven’t seen the whole story, he has.  His ways are always better than yours.

Mar. 11th Psalm 26:2 “Test me, O Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind.”

Now that you have turned yourself over to him, know that his ways are the best ways, know that he has equipped you, are you willing to let him in?  Are you willing to let him into your heart always?  Even when you might not have the kindest of hearts?  Are you willing to let him test you knowing that he will always catch you?  Also knowing that the test might not be easy?

Mar. 12th Psalm 34:18 “I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you.”

The good news is that you are not alone in this.  He loves it when we ban together.  He even calls us to go two by two.  Have are the people around you helping and encouraging you to live a life that is in the glory of God.

Finding Rest

Mexico can be a wonderful and fun place.  It can be very draining however.  God has some words of comfort for this as well.

Mar 13th   Psalm 61:5 “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”

Try turning to him as soon as you feel exhausted.  He can refuel and reenergize you.  No amount of coffee or energy drinks can give you the energy you need.

Mar. 14th Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Sometimes you need a break.  Sometimes you need to take time to breath.  We get to wrapped up in doing and getting things done when what we really need is quiet and stillness.

Mar. 15th Exodus 33:14 “The Lord replied, ‘my presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

The Lord will provide all that you need.  Walk with him and he will even give you the rest you need.   How are you going to keep your focus on him even when you are tired?

Mar. 16th Psalm 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

We are created an imperfect people.  Our bodies fail.  They hurt, they get tired.  But our God is a perfect God.  He never fails.  Through him we can find our strength and our hope.

Mar. 17th Psalm 62:1-2 “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.  He alone is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”

We need a strong foundation to that we can stand strong.  How are you making God the foundation that you need to stay strong?

Mar. 18th Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

God is with you always.  He’s working with you.  He’s helping you through.  You can find rest in him.

Mar. 19th Mark 6:31 “Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not have a chance to eat he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

We are not ment to always be busy.  God wants us to also have rest and quiet.  We tend to get so caught up in the hussel and bussle of everything we can use sight of what we really came there to do.  We can spread the word of Jesus all day long but if we are doing it without him in it we aren’t doing

Concurring Fear

Mar 20th Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Can you have a relationship with someone who doesn’t count on you?  How does it make you feel when someone asks you to do something but then they go ahead and do it instead?  That is why “without faith it is impossible to please God.”  It is a scary concept but if you can let go and let him take control he will reward you.  Not with trophies or money, but with a kingdom we can never imagine.

Mar. 21st  John 10:29  “My father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my father’s hand.”

God is greater than anything anyone can throw at you.  Are you willing to believe this?

Mar. 22nd John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

There are going to be times when you are nervous.  Whether it’s about teaching, developing relationships, or just our environment.  Let’s face it, just getting on a bus for 30+ hours with people you don’t know very well an be trying.  God knows this and he knows you might be afraid.  He is ready for you to turn to him so he can give you peace.    What are some things about this trip that you need to turn over to him?

Mar. 23rd Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with Thanksgiving, present your request to the Lord.”

Yesterday you admitted the things you are nervous about.  Now you need to pray about them.  You need to pray that the Lord takes care of them.  Then you need to stop being anxious about them.  It’s not an easy thing to do.  Our human nature wants to fix it ourselves and make sure that we have nothing to be worried about.  Sometimes letting him take over can seem impossible.  Keep in mind however this is the same God that make the oceans, and the mountains.  He has shout the mouths of lions, he’s even brought the dead to life.  Doesn’t it seem kinda silly that he’s not going to take care of the things you are worried about?

Mar. 24th 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Sometimes it’s easy to ask yourself “why would he listen to me?  I’m totally insignificant.  But you aren’t.  He wants to hear your needs.  He longs to calm your fears.  He wants to help you because he cares for you.  In this passage it says you.  Not, the other guy over there, He cares for each and every one of us.  So go to him.

Mar. 25th Psalm 131:2 “But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.

Mothers don’t abandon their children when they wean them.  They slowly walk with them to grow up.  God does the same thing.  He’s not going to send you out into the world without giving you the tools you need.  He is there beside you and you to help you and protect you.

Mar. 26th John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.  In this world take heart!  I have overcome the world.”

It is so easy to be afraid of the things that we are going to face.  The unknown is sometimes more scary than the truth we know.  When things seem impossible remember that God has made promises.  He will overcome the things in this world.

Preparing Your Heart

Mar. 27th Job 11:13 “Yet if you devote your heart to him and stretch out your hands to him”

You can’t give up your heart without giving up control as well.  You can’t say that you will devote yourself to him and still manipulate his plan.  You have to let him do what he is going to do.  Trust in him because he never fails.

Mar. 28th Proverbs 3:5   “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Go into this totally relying on him.  Know that he will take care of all the things you worry about because, let’s face it, you can’t do anything about them anyway.

Mar. 29th Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

It will be very easy to get over whelmed.  These are the times when doubt, fear, even self-fulfillment can happen.  Don’t let it.  When you are tired and stressed, it is even more important to turn to him.  Take time to pray, be in the word, just relax in him.

Mar. 30th Romans 12:2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good pleasing and perfect will.”

How are you tempted to conform to this world?  Is it something as simple as skimping on your devotional time because you are trying to get everything done?  Or is it as big as doing or saying things you know are wrong because other people make them seem right.  Take time right now to think about what you can do differently to change this.  To change your mind set.

Mar. 31st Proverbs 23:26 “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways”

It is so easy to look at things that are going wrong.  It is so easy to be discouraged.  This is why it is so important to turn our hearts over to him.  We have to keep our eyes on the prize.  Know and believe that his way is the best way.

April 1st Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Sometimes it is hard to believe that we can have a clean heart.  Sometimes we think that our wrong is so bad that it can never be right.  This is a lie.  Even if you were the only person that was ever created Jesus would have come, died on the cross for you.  All we have to do is let him in.  We just have to let him wipe our hearts clean.

April 2nd Psalms 73:26 “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

We are going to fail.  We are going to mess up.  Just because we are Christians doesn’t mean we have it all figured out.  I have people in my life that tell me I use Christ as a crutch.  That I can’t live life without him.  They say this like I’m going to be insulted and argue with them.  Guess what!  They are right.  I can’t do any of this alone.  I have failed time and time again.  It isn’t until I give myself, my heart, my life, my all to him.  It isn’t until I let him into my life, every part, even the parts that are dark and dirty that I can truly live a life I think is worthy.  Not just of him, but of my loved ones and myself.  When God has control things aren’t always great, but they are always good.  Things aren’t perfect but there’s always hope.  Without Christ, there is something missing.  There is no hope. He is my portion forever, he is my wholeness forever.  He is the only thing that can fill me and make me whole.

Following April 2nd we invite you to use the verses for each lesson as our daily devotional
